Ziam Plot SummaryEarth is approaching the brink of environmental collapse. A mysterious bacteria, thawed from melting ice caps, is killing off marine life in droves. Food shortages have become the new norm and as resources dwindle, the totalitarian government in Thailand scrambles to assert control. The country teeters on the edge of anarchy.This interesting premise forms the backbone of Netflix’s latest Thai zombie flick, Ziam. The film blends a post-apocalyptic setting with a full-throttle action horror, and while it certainly has its flaws (especially when it comes to the lack of characterisation and paper-thin storyline) it does a reasonably good job of delivering a no-frills Friday night watch.
At the heart of the chaos is Singh, a former Muay Thai fighter thrust into hero mode when his girlfriend Rin, a nurse, becomes trapped at a hospital. The catalyst for all this is a so-called “miracle cure” for the food shortage but, of course, it turns people into flesh-eating zombies. Singh’s mission here though is simple: rescue Rin before the infected kill her.
How did the outbreak start?Mr Vasu shows up at the hospital with a “miracle” to help the Thai people survive the food crisis. Unfortunately, this happens to be crates of contaminated fish. This deadly bacteria is rife in these fish, and his food turns people into zombies. Or, at least Patient Zero, who goes on to infect everybody else. Unfortunately, this is also the same hospital that Rin is currently working in.
