The University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State, has issued a threat to commence a strike on April 9 if the hospital’s electricity supply is not restored.

Furthermore, the hospital staff have issued a threat to embark on a seven-day strike if the hospital is not reconnected to electricity before Tuesday, April 9.

  • A powerful earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, struck Taiwan, resulting in at least four deaths and numerous injuries

A powerful earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, struck Taiwan, resulting in at least four deaths and numerous injuries

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, marking the strongest tremor to hit the island in at least 25 years. Mainland China, Japan, and the Philippines issued tsunami warnings in response.

According to Taiwan’s government, four people have died in the mountainous, sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien, near the epicenter, with 711 individuals reported injured.

The fire department reported that 77 individuals remained trapped, some in collapsed buildings in Hualien.

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake caused the collapse of at least 26 buildings and left others tilting, particularly in the vicinity of the epicenter in the eastern county of Hualien.

The earthquake marked the most powerful to hit Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.6 magnitude quake resulted in 2,400 fatalities and left 50,000 buildings damaged.

Additionally, a small tsunami struck southern Japanese islands in the wake of the earthquake.

Japan’s chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that there have been no reports of injury or damage in the country. He urged residents in the Okinawa region to remain on high ground until all tsunami advisories are lifted.

Following Wednesday’s earthquake, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest producer of advanced microchips, partially suspended its operations. Three other semiconductor factories also temporarily halted parts of their operations.

TSMC stated, “To ensure the safety of personnel, some fabs were evacuated according to company procedure. We are currently confirming the details of the impact.”

The self-governing island off the southern coast of China is at the center of geopolitical tension between Washington and Beijing. Beijing seeks for Taiwan to reunify with the mainland.

After the earthquake, Taipei resident Hsien-hsuen Keng remarked, “Earthquakes are a common occurrence, and I’ve grown accustomed to them. But today was the first time I was scared to tears by an earthquake. I was awakened by the earthquake. I had never felt such intense shaking before.”

She described how her fifth-floor apartment shook so violently that, “Apart from earthquake drills in elementary school, this was the first time I had experienced such a situation.”

Wu Chien-fu, the head of Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring bureau, mentioned that effects were detected as far away as Kinmen, a Taiwanese-controlled island off the coast of China.

12 years old girl married to 63 years old priest is placed ‘under police protection’ as public call for arrest of priest

In response to public outrage, Ghanaian police have intervened to protect a 12-year-old girl and her mother after news of the girl’s marriage to a 63-year-old priest sparked widespread condemnation. The wedding ceremony occurred on Saturday, March 30, in Nungua, Ghana, as the man, identified as Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, married the child, reportedly named Naa Okromo.

The priest reportedly selected the girl when she was just six years old.

According to the Ghana Police Service, they have located the 12-year-old girl and she is now under police protection, along with her mother.

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Department of Social Welfare, is providing the necessary support to the girl while the matter is under investigation,” the Police stated.

This development follows calls from various quarters, including the African Education Watch think tank, numerous celebrities, and social media commentators, demanding the immediate arrest of Gborbu Wulomo for his involvement in marrying the child.

In a Facebook post, Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of African Education Watch, emphasized that it is illegal to marry a 12-year-old girl according to the law. He stated, “The excuse that she won’t be performing conjugal duties is immaterial to the law. The cops must grab the Nungua Wulomo and cohorts now!”

Gborbu Wulomo, who serves as the Overlord of all Ga-Damgbe State, is at the center of the controversy.

  • The EFCC is set to arraign Binance executives Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla on Thursday

The EFCC is set to arraign Binance executives Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla on Thursday

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is scheduled to arraign Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, both high-ranking officials of Binance Holdings Ltd, on Thursday. They face five counts of money laundering charges.

According to reports on Tuesday, Binance, Mr. Gambaryan, and Mr. Anjarwalla, who escaped from lawful custody on March 22 and left Nigeria, will appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

The crypto exchange firm and Messrs Gambaryan and Anjarwalla are listed as the first to third defendants, respectively. However, Mr. Anjarwalla, described by the EFCC as “at large” in the counts, is anticipated to be arraigned in absentia.

The anti-graft agency filed a charge on March 28, alleging that the trio engaged in money laundering amounting to $35,400,000.

Count one accuses the defendants of conducting the specialized business of other financial institutions without a valid license between January 2023 and January 2024 in Abuja. This offense is said to contravene sections 57(1) and (2) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020, and is punishable under section 57(5) of the same act.

Additionally, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is set to arraign Binance Holdings Limited, Mr. Gambaryan, and the fugitive Mr. Anjarwalla on April 4. The charges relate to allegations of tax evasion.

In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024, the three defendants are set to be arraigned before Justice Nwite on four counts.

Despite the ongoing Easter vacation at the Federal High Court, which commenced on March 22 and is scheduled to end on April 8, Chief Judge Justice John Tsoho has directed the transfer of the Binance case file to Justice Nwite. This transfer occurs even though Justice Nwite is not designated as a vacation judge.

The Chief Judge granted a fiat for Justice Nwite to handle the case during the vacation period due to its significance to national interests.

The FIRS pressed charges and filed them on March 22, alleging that the defendants committed the offense around February 1.

Count one accuses them of operating and providing services to subscribers on the Binance platform without registering with the FIRS to remit all applicable taxes. These offenses are said to be punishable under sections 8 and 29 of the VAT Act of 1993 (as amended), section 40 of the FIRS Establishment Act, 2007 (as amended), and provisions of section 94 of the Companies Income Tax Act (as amended), respectively.

Both cases have been scheduled for Thursday to facilitate an expedited hearing process.

With her body smeared with some sticky liquid, later discovered to be sperm, the girl slept until her father came to wake up his mother and children, carrying his youngest daughter to take her inside their apartment to sleep.

However, the father noticed the stickiness on his daughter’s thighs and buttocks and was thrown into shock when he smelt the substance and discovered it to be sperm.

The third born toddler who was being taken care of by her father and grandmother, was said to have lost her mother in August 2023, five days after she delivered her fourth child, a son.

The distraught father of the victim said

“We don’t have light in our area, so we used to sleep in our veranda. That day, when I returned from my shop, I fed the children while grandma carried the baby. After that, I went to take care of the chickens I’m rearing. By then, they had all slept on the veranda. Since I was not feeling sleepy, I went to friends in our neighbourhood to exchange pleasantries and have general discussions with them.

I returned home a little after 11 pm and woke everyone up to go inside. As I picked my daughter to hold her to my chest as the youngest among the girls, I noticed my hand being smeared with a wet, sticky substance. Wondering what it was, I checked her underpants and exclaimed. I ran inside and showed my mother. It was sperm. I also called a female neighbour to check it and she confirmed it as sperm.

I couldn’t hold myself. I went out with my daughter to lodge a complaint with law enforcement agents but was sent back by local security men. I went out again but was still stopped until I showed my daughter to them and they were amazed.

They got a bike for me and on the way, we met Amotekun personnel. At first, they thought I stole a child until. I explained to them what happened. After informing their superiors and being given directives, they went to my residence and picked the males there to find out the culprit among them.”

When interrogated, the suspect confessed to committing the crime.

“I live with my parents but I used to sleep in the rooms of some men living in the compound. It is true that I slept with the three-year-old girl.”

When asked why he did it, he responded

“I don’t even understand myself. My manhood has not been functioning since about 10 years ago. I don’t have a girlfriend because of my condition. The girl was crying and I left her. It is true that I ejaculated and poured it on her. I slept in the room of one of the men before we were arrested at dawn on Friday. The girl pointed at me when asked to identify the person who touched her among the six of us arrested.”

They were found guilty of brutally beating the child with “at least four different instruments” over three days in 2021, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

District Attorney Raymond Tierney in a press release said:

“This little boy was beaten and suffered for days at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until he unfortunately succumbed to his severe and extensive injuries.”
